Thomas Newcomb for S. Lownds 1681 / 1682, London - Hardcover. 8vo. (iv - [double frontis]), (xviii), 52, (xii), 162, (vi), 78, (xiv), 273 (i), 67, (iii), 5-45, (xvii), 24, (ii - errata). pp. Later half leather with marbled paper boards and gilt-stamped leather title label to spine. Double frontispiece (the first the well known plate depicting Saul and Samuel, the second the equally famous design in six compartments, each illustrating a different facet of the text). Another plate at rear and several woodcuts in text. Primary title page, and six secondary title pages (one for each part). The important second edition of Saducismus Triumphatus, quite substantially revised from the first, despite hardly a year having passed between them. In particular there is added a new "Account of this Second Edition" and More (who also edited the work) added a second part to his introductory essay, entitled "An Answer to a Letter of a Learned Psychopyrist Concerning the True Notion of a Spirit," which was largely an attack on Baxter's very different ideas on the subject. There is also an additional full-page plate representing two stones expelled through the penis of a child who was said to be suffering the effects of witchcraft that was not in the first edition. Following the frontipieces, main title page (dated 1682) and introductory matter, the book is divided into six main parts, each with its own (dated) title page. The parts and the years printed on them (in this volume) are: Saducismus Triumphatus . The First Part . (1682); An Answer to a Letter of a Learned Psychopyrist . by Henry More, (1681); Saducismus Triumphatus The Second Part (1681); A Continuation of the Collections or a few More Stories of Apparitions and Witchcraft by Henry More, (1682); A Whip for the Droll, Fidler to the Atheist, (1682); An Account of What Happened in Sweden to Some Persons Accused for Witches, by Anthony Horneck, (1682). The author, Joseph Glanvil was an Oxford graduate who became the chaplain to King Charles II. Glanvil's study of the occult was inspired by a belief that there was a scientific basis to events of the supernatural, and this book was written to refute the disbelievers and confirm the existence of witchcraft. Most of the stories in the book are anecdotal, derived from informal meetings at Ragley Castle, which were attended by other investigators, as well as psychics and mediums who demonstrated their abilities. Glanvil had only one personal experience with witchcraft, and that came through an encounter with an epileptic. In spite of his apparent gullibility, Glanvil tried to be objective in his studies of the supernatural. George Lyman Kittredge wrote of Glanvil's work, "It was thought to have put the belief in appartitions and witchcraft on an unshakable basis of science and philosophy. No other English work on the subject had a more powerful influence." From the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, with his ex-libris seal blind-stamped on the first blank. Fresh endpapers. Binding clean and tight, second frontispiece starting to separate at inner margin, but still quite secure. The fore-edge margin of the main title-page has been cropped about half-an-inch short, but this does not affect the text or borders of the page. First few leaves a little darkened, normal light discoloration etc. to be found in a book of this vintage, still a VG + copy of a scarce and important edition. [Attributes: First Edition]
