Delle nozze was composed in honor of the marriage of Virginia Appiana of Aragona, signora de Piombino, to Jacopo VI Fieschi Appiani. Drawing on classical authors, mostly Roman, and especially on Plurarch's Moralia, Fausto sets forth the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of women in this early example of the marriage customs and rites manual. Fausto Sebastiano was born in Longiano near Forli about 1502 and died in 1565. In 1532, he compiled an important translation and commentary of Petrarch, for which Fausto is considered to be one of the important critics of the period. Fausto interprets Petrarch's Rime Sparse (Rerum vulgarium fragmenta) as a spiritual drama that unfolds amidst the courts of Europe where the Christian poet faces greed and baseness of every sort proffered by bishops and priests, popes and princes, grandes dames and whores, all the while yearning for God's promise offered in the gospels and taught by Augustine. Practical, independent, and possessed of a deep faith in the divine word, Fausto's Petrarch shows the way for sixteenth-century courtiers to prosper in this world without losing their way to unholy error (Norton, 123). In 1542, Fausto wrote an instructive essay for princes titled De lo istituire un figlio d'un principe da li X. infino a gl'anni de la discretione (1542). His very specific approach to a liberal arts education--in which he calls for three tutors: one for religious studies, another for moral questions, and a third for literary matters--includes the proper study models for grammar, literature, economics, ethics, and politics, and advises that music, painting, and drawing should also be taught. Voicing the sentiments of the Protestant humanist, Fausto offers little encouragement to the woman who, in Renaissance Italy, had ample opportunity to liberate herself. "All a wife's care," said Fausto da Longiano "is to know the habits and ways of her husband and be obedient, not hard, not difficult, not vexing, but composed, pleasant merry, and gracious" (Kelso, 97).
