Illustrated and Signed First Day Cover
1945 - Japanese naval officer and commander of the destroyer Amagiri which sank the PT-109 commanded by John F. Kennedy in the Pacific during World War II. Outstanding and historically important signed First Day Cover, postmarked September 28, 1945, the day the war ended in the Pacific, on which Yamashiro has drawn a detailed map outlining the various islands and waterways in the Solomon group and pinpoints what he perceived to be the exact location where he rammed and subsequently sank the U.S. PT-109. Conspicuously drawn are Kolombangara Island and the Vella Gulf which Yamashiro indicates to be the location of the collision course, marking it "PT" and "AMAGIRI", boldly signing his name in full with rank of Captain and dating the incident as having occurred on August 2, 1943. In addition to Yamshiro's map, this envelope has a hand-colored printed scene of an American marine, tanks, and amphibious vessels engaged in combat, created by known artist Day Lowry. The envelope is further enhanced with the addition of a JFK five-cent U.S. postage stamp applied and cancelled on May 29, 1954, its first day of issue. Very good condition.
