By John Machin. 2 volumes, octavo (195 × 118 mm). Contemporary calf, double gilt rules, red morocco labels, sides bordered with decorative roll in blind. Engraved allegorical frontispieces and engraved headpieces by the translator, 47 folding engraved plates, 2 folding letterpress tables, woodcut initials, initial-borders and head- and tailpieces. With errata at end, without half-titles and blank 2 (Dd4) as usual. Ownership inscription on first title verso: "Charles Chadwick, Middle Temple, 1777. Given me by Miss Holme of Brownhill in memory of her father", and with Chadwick's engraved armorial bookplates. Extremities rubbed, one label chipped, an excellent copy, clean and fresh. First edition in English of the Principia, based on the 1726 Pemberton edition of the Latin text and dedicated to Sir Hans Sloane as President of the Royal Society. The translator Andrew Motte (1696–1734) was the son of the printer Benjamin Motte and very briefly a lecturer on geometry at Gresham College. Also included is Machin's attempt to rectify Newton's lunar theory. Machin (1686?–1751) was on the Royal Society's committee set up to adjudicate the priority dispute between Newton and Leibnitz over the invention of the calculus, which vindicated Newton, and one of the editors of the resulting Commercium epistolicum. He was professor of astronomy at Gresham College from 1713 until his death.
