Great Mammoth Empire City Circus and Menagerie - Balloon Ascension Broadside
Torrey Brothers Printers, New York 1871 - Double-sided broadside. Appoximately 10" x 27.5". Minor edgewear. Exceptionally scarce. Elaborate double-sided broadside advertising the Empire City Circus. (Printing on one side is slightly visible on the other.) One side features illustrations of the "Grand Gratuitous Balloon Ascension!" with "8 Mammoth Air Ships" with the aeronauts Ruinault, Smythe, and Renno. The eight balloons in the exhibition were the City of Paris, Carrier Pigeon, General Trochu, King William, Tallulch, Napoleon III, Narramattah, and Apollo. It also includes a sensationalized description of the death of aeronaut Paul Rouge, who died in an 1870 crash at McGregor, Iowa. The other side of the poster shows illustrations of an elaborate circus parade, a big top, an elephant, a strong man, a lion, horse acts, and a camel. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
