The Executioner's Song [Signed]
Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1979. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing, of this famed Norman Mailer work (some soiling to the page block's closed edges, light fading to the spine extremities), in a Fine dust jacket (quite slight edge wear), SIGNED BY NORMAN MAILER on the title page. Mailer was a pioneer and master of narrative nonfiction, of which this work is an excellent example. Based primarily on interviews with the friends and family of both murderer Gary Gilmore and his victims, the book details the events surrounding the murder itself as well as the subsequent trial, conviction, death sentence, and execution of Gary Gilmore, the first person to be executed for a crime in the United States following the 1976 reinstatement of the death penalty after a ten-year hiatus (which death sentence was carried out by firing squad at Gilmore's demand as he did not want to pursue the appeals process). The striking title may well have been taken from "The Lord High Executioner's Song" by Gilbert and Sullivan (part of "The Mikado"). The book won the 1980 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and was a finalist for the 1980 National Book Award for Fiction (won by William Styron's "Sophie's Choice"). Due to the large size of the book, copies in nice condition are surprisingly difficult to find, and signed copies are quite scarce. A Very Good copy, SIGNED BY NORMAN MAILER. QUITE SCARCE.
