The Elementary Principles of Tactics;
London: S. Hooper, , 1771. London: S. Hooper, , 1771. With New Observations on the Military Art. Written originally in French by Sieur B.-, Knight of the Military Order of St. Lewes and translated by an Officer of the British Army. Octavo. (200 × 122 mm) Contemporary calf, red morocco label, compaertments gilt with elegant floral tools, broad gilt floral panels to the boards with single flower centre tool, foliate roll to edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers. 12 folding plates at the rear. A little rubbed, neatly restored on the joints and at head- and tail-cap, light browning, some of the plates slightly creased from misfolding as often, but a very good copy. First edition. Uncommon work, just seven copies on OCLC, by a little-known, but influential author, included in Gruber's "books preferred". In his Génie et métier chez Napoléon Camon revealed that Napoleon had included Bosroger amongst the elevated company of Frederick the Great and Guibert in the development of his system of war. He certainly seems to have been an original thinker, commenting in depth on the then current forms of the manual exercise and manoeuvres. Houlding however considers him "second-rate" and his ideas, as "a firm partisan of the column of attack … not in the British tactical tradition … over-geometric, and impracticable in action". (Fit for Service, pp.224-5). Monogramed, Bath garter bookplate of Prince William Frederick, second duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh. "Prince William entered the army with a captain's commission and the rank of colonel in 1789, at the age of thirteen, and he was frequently and rapidly promoted: he was a major-general at twenty, and made lieutenant-general in 1799, general in 1808, and field marshal in 1816. An enthusiastic and brave, if not terribly professional, soldier, he served with his regiments in the European wars of the turn of the century" (ODNB). A pretty copy with an excellent provenance.
