A General Chart on Mercator's Projection, to shew the Track of the Lion and Hindostan from England to the Gulph of Pekin in China.
1796 - Copper engraving coloured in outline, 92,5 x 56,5 cm From 'An Authentic Account of An Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China' by Sir George Staunton, describing George Macartney's travells to China. Macartney was Britain's first envoy to China, with a task to convince the Chinese emperor to ease restrictions on trade between Great Britain and China. The map shows the journeys of the ships Lion and Hindostan, and was drawn by Macartney' prvate secretary John Barrow, later Secretary to the Admiralty and was a vice-president and founding member of the Royal Geographical Society. Folds slightly age-toned with tiny repaired tears and holes, otherwise in a good condition.
