Theatrum Scotiae. Containing the prospects of His Majesty's castles and palaces: together with those of the most considerable towns and colleges; the ruins of many ancient abbeys, churches, monasteries and convents, within the said Kingdom. All curiously engraven on copper plates. With a short description of each place.
London: Printed for D. Browne at Exeter-Change., 1718. - Folio, title in red & black with engr. coat of arms, [2], 12, engr. dedication leaf with royal coat of arms at the head, 60 double page engr. plates, some mounted, some un-numbered, a few paper repairs in lower blank margins, small stain in margins of dedication leaf and first leaf of text, recent half crushed dark red morocco, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments, red cloth sides. Lacking the large folding prospect of the City of Edinburgh, but with 'The North-East view of Edinburgh Castle' as the first plate, not normally found in this edition. (some browning to blank margins of this plate). [The first edition of the 'Theatrum' was published in 1693. The above edition was issued in two states. Both appear to be scarce. This is the issue with the 12 pages of introductory text rather than the 43 pages in the other issue. The title-page no longer bears Slezer's name and has been altered from 'Their Majesties castles' to 'His Majesty's castles.' One of the views of Stirling castle, which also appears here for the first time, differs from that illustrated in Cavers in that the engraved title at the foot has been largely trimmed off, and is now on the top left hand side of the image. This is again probably due to a change of monarch. This plate also bears the name of the artist and engraver (A. Johnstone & Mulder). ESTC locates only 3 copies of the above issue, 2 in the UK and 1 in North America. ESTC T84163] [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
