London: Faber and Faber 1965 - First edition, first printing. Publisher's red cloth, lettered in gilt; in the original yellow dust jacket. Near fine, with a hint of wear to the extremities, a few light spots to the free endpapers, otherwise bright and fresh pages; unclipped dust jacket, with some light wear to the extremities, a few minor nicks to the spine head, a hint of toning to the spine, a short closed tear to the bottom edge of the rear panel, minor traces of light spotting and faint soiling to the otherwise bright panels. Overall, a near fine copy. Ariel is Plath's second collection of poetry and the first to be published posthumously. This first British edition was edited by her husband Ted Hughes and published in 1965, two years after the author's suicide. Hughes included a rearrangement of the poems in Plath's Ariel manuscript, but chose to replace twelve of the poems with some of Plath's later writings. The first American edition, first published in 1966, includes three poems not included in this edition, as well as an additional introduction by poet Robert Lowell. Ariel contains poetry that is markedly different than Plath's first anthology, The Colossus and Other Poems (1960). As Lowell explains in his introduction to the American edition, "Everything in these poems is personal, confessional, felt, but the manner of feeling is controlled hallucination, the autobiography of a fever She is driven forward by the pounding pistons of her heart." While Colossus shows the young poet's "laborious shyness," Ariel contains rapidly produced, unfiltered poems that provide insight into Plath's psyche at the end of her life and show her true talent and ability for verse.
