London, Dickinson & Sons (1844). Vorsichtig gereinigtes Exemplar von sehr guter Erhaltung!***A particularly rare book with beautiful plates of Ethiopia. At the same time an indispensible supplement to Harris' 3 text volumes (published separately) and to the great landscape painter Johann Martin Bernatz’s wonderful work ‘Scenes in Ethiopia’. Harris and Bernatz were travelling companions on an expedition to Ethiopia and part of the plates were made after Bernatz’s drawings, the others after the author’s. Both their works describe the scientific expedition they made together to southern Ethiopia. They went from Tadjura to Ankober, the capital of Shoa, where they arrived in July 1841. There they met Krapf and Beke. Harris gathered as much information as possible on Shoa and its inhabitants and returned to Tadjura at the beginning of 1843. Three important books resulted form this expedition. The first was Harris’s ‘The Highlands of Ethiopia’, which contains the travel report. The second was Bernatz’s above-mentioned plate book ‘Scenes in Ethiopia’, published in 1852. The last – and much the rarest – is Harris’s ‘Illustrations of the Highlands of Aethiopia’, which we are offering here. It contains impressive plates of Ethiopian landscapes, sceneries and a series of magnificent illustrations of the natives by Bernatz and Harris. It seems that a few coloured copies existed, but even the present edition is very rare and only 3 copies were auctioned in the past 35 years. – Henze 463, Abbey Travel I, 291.
