MITIGATION OF SLAVERY, In Two Parts. Part I: Letters and Papers of the Late Hon. Joshua Steele. Part II: Letters to Thomas Clarkson, Esq. M.A.
London printed by R. and A. Taylor and sold by Longman Hurst Rees Orme and Brown 1814 - FIRST EDITION 1814, 8vo, approximately 215 x 135 mm, 8½ x 5 ¼ inches, pages: xxxii, 192; 193-528 including index and errata, bound in full calf, double gilt ruled border to covers, rebacked to style with gilt raised bands, richly gilt in compartments, dark red gilt lettered morocco label, faint old marbling to edges, gilt inner dentelles (turn ins), original marbled endpapers retained. Endpapers faintly foxed, neat inscription dated 1846 on second blank front endpaper, a few pages unopened, small chip to 1 lower margin, due to paper flaw. A very good clean sturdy copy of the scarce first edition of a work on the evils of slavery. William Dickson (1751-1823) of Moffat in Scotland drove the Abolitionist campaign there. He had been in Barbados as the secretary to the Governor for 13 years and saw slaves being overworked, brutally punished and executed without a proper trial. When he came back to London he offered his services to the Abolitionist Society. He was sent to Scotland, which he turned into a powerhouse for the movement. Sabin Volume 1, 20095.
