A Year's Campaigning In India, From March, 1857, to March 1858
London & Calcutta: W. Thacker, 1858. London & Calcutta: W. Thacker,, 1858. Octavo. Recent cherry-red half calf by Bayntun of Bath, matching linen boards, black morocco labels, trophy devices gilt to the compartments, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Tinted lithograph frontispiece of a Muzbee Sikh Native Officer of the Punjab Pioneers and 4 folding plans and sketch maps. Light toning of the text, short splits to the folding maps professionally repaired verso, a very good copy. First edition. Uncommon, eight locations on COPAC. Medley was Captain, Bengal Engineers, and Garrison Engineer of Lucknow, and before proceeding to his Mutiny services in Delhi and Lucknow, he offers an account of the Bozdar Expedition in the Derajat Hills under Nevile Chamberlain. The success of this campaign was largely overshadowed by the outbreak of the Mutiny just a few months later, and Medley is one of the few eye-witness accounts of this campaign against Baluchis of the North-West Frontier. Riddick is extremely complimentary Medley's work; " … with an economy of words and preciseness of expression, this military engineer's account offers unique descriptions of fortifications, artillery positions, reconnoitring and surveying … With measured modesty his recollections indicate the importance of his role in laying positions for the siege guns at Delhi … Medley's narrative avoids the hysteria of the mutiny for a clear, concise portrayal of his activities and the general scene around him".
