The Little Man and Other Satires [Rare Signed Family Copy]
London: Heinemann, 1915. London: Heinemann, 1915. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing (spine ends pushed, rubbing to spine extremities and board corners, some light spotting to the front board -- lacking the scarce dust jacket), SIGNED AND CONTEMPORARILY DATED BY JOHN GALSWORTHY TO HIS SISTER BLANCHE LILIAN SAUTER on the front free endpaper as follows: "B. L. S. / from/ J.G." and dated by him to the page's upper right corner "May 6, 1915." (Blanche Lilian Sauter also was the wife of the Bavarian-born painter Georg Sauter.) The volume gathers 21 Galsworthy satires, a few of which were previously published. John Galsworthy won the 1932 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his distinguished art of narration which takes its highest form in The Forsyte Saga", making him only the second English, and the fourth British, writer to win the Prize. The King made him a member of the Order of Merit, the most prized award for English men of letters, and his fellow authors made him the first President of PEN. At his death, Galsworthy was England's most prominent author. (Virginia Woolf had a different view of Galsworthy and on his death noted in her diary that she was glad that "that stuffed shirt" had died.) Signed copies of the book are quite scarce to the market and signed family copies are quite a bit scarcer. A Very Good copy of a QUITE SCARCE FAMILY COPY, PRESENTED BY JOHN GALSWORTHY TO HIS SISTER BLANCHE LILIAN SAUTER AND DATED BY GALSWORTHY CONTEMPORARILY WITH THE BOOK'S PUBLICATION. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.
