Tibetan Blockprints / Undated Tibetan Buddhist Religious Texts, circa 1800s
Unknown, Unknown 1880 - Date undetermined [probaby 19th century] / place undetermined [probably Mongolia]. 26 parchment leaves, 3.5" tall x 8.75" long, block printed on both sides (except for two), with some hand annotation [also undated]. At least one of the leaves has an embossed watermark in Cyrillic [Russian] characters. Marginal age-toning, some leaves with moisture stains not affecting the legibility of the text. Previous owner was told they these came from a Mongolian monastery in which Tibetan Buddhism was spoken and, of course, written. There are four separate sets of folios [leaves] and at least 2 full texts among them, most likely all being prayer texts used in daily liturgies, read or chanted during Buddhist services. Their size and length appear to be that. Two sets of these folios may or may not be complete books - those who have looked at Tibetan numbering systems will know that difficulty - but two texts are very clearly complete books. There are 26 folios (leaves) in all, with writing on both sides (except for two), hence 50 pages of actual text. There were clearly several hands at work in these; see scans. L103 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
