Nineteen Eighty Four - The Facsimile
Secker & Warburg LONDON 1984 - This remarkable and important facsimile was brought out in 1984 for obvious reasons. This is the first printing, and possibly the only one. It is a large and heavy book, very sturdily bound, and it exactly reproduces all the surviving pages of the extant manuscript, with the numerous comments, marginalia and corrections. Orwell was a poor keeper of manuscripts, as his wife attested. This makes the reproduction of all the existing pages, at the original size, and in the author's handwriting, a wonderful experience. The left hand pages reproduce the Peter Davison transcript, and the right hand reproduces the Orwell hand written text. This allows a line for line comparison, all at the original size. It makes for a moving experience. Orwell, dying on the island of Jura, remained true to the highest standards of English prose. An enthralling book, and it is probably beyond being published today because of the costs involved. Daniel Siegel writes: 'The facsimile, carefully, faithfully, and lovingly produced, is a further sign of our society's determination to remember, to remember everything and to understand.' The book was printed using paper that has slightly tanned, which is a shame. This is an important cultural document, and petty economy should not have been considered. However, the book is otherwise well made, and is very heavy and substantial. The boards are heavy, and covered in grey cloth. The spine has the titling in gold. The jacket is elegant and simple, and is protected within a mylar sleeve. A hefty volume, and if it needs to travel outside the UK it will need extra postage. It will also require insurance wherever it goes to. RARE COLLECTABLE [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
