The Great Beast. The Life of Aleister Crowley [Together With] Typed Signed Letter from Symonds [Together With] Prospectus for The Magic of Aleister Crowley
London: Rider and Company, 1951. - FIRST EDITION, FIRST IMPRESSION.Octavo pp. 316. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt titles to spine. Original pictorial dust jacket retaining the blue wraparound band. Very good copy of the book with just a little light foxing. The jacket has some loss to head (touching author's name) and foot of spine and top left corner of the lower panel, along with some edge chips and creasing. The rare wraparound band, featuring press quotes "The Wickedest Man in the World" "The King of Depravity" "A man we'd like to hang" and "A Cannibal at large" has been folded at the centre (kept inside the book) and has some foxing, but the blue print remains strong and bright. The prospectus for The Magic of Aleister Crowley (Frederick Muller, 1958) is a single sheet printed on both sides, with a reproduction of the dust jacket in blue on one side and synopsis and order slip on the other. Folded once, but clean and in very good condition. Symonds letter is a single sheet of his headed paper (66 Lyncroft Mansions), dated 7 June 1958, typed on both sides and signed in ink. In reply to a Mr Howard's enquiry regarding obtaining Crowley works he mentions the British Museum, Watkins Bookshop, "Mr Karl Germer of America [I can't remember his address]", "Mr Gerald Yorke of 5 Montagu Square" and finishes with: "The only way to build up a collection of Crowleyana is to have plenty of money and bid for the items when they come up in Sotheby's!" - so nothing has changed there then.
