A Circuit Rider's Wife
Henry Altemus Company, Philadelphia 1910 - First edition. Illustrations by William H. Everett. Octavo. Original green cloth binding, with decorative gilt stamping. Mild edgewear, an attractive, very good or better copy. Inscribed and dated by Harris on the front flyleaf: "With compliments of the Author, Corra Harris. In the Valley, September 4th 1922." Corra May Harris (1869-1935) was, for a time, the most widely known woman from the state of Georgia. Her literary reputation during her life, and her legacy since, rest on this novel. Drawing heavily on her troubled marriage to Methodist minister and educator Lundy Howard Harris, it tells of the challenges, hardships, and mostly intangible rewards of itinerant country preaching in the northern Georgia mountains. Harris wrote more than two dozen books and published over 200 articles and short stories, and well over a thousand book reviews. Although she became famous for her fiction, she earned a reputation for reactionary conservatism with a notorious nationally published piece defending the lynching of Thomas Wilkes, alias Sam Hose, near Newnan, Georgia in 1899 and her subsequent essays on southern identity. She was not so easily categorized though, her 1915 novel *The Co-Citizens* was seen as both showing support and opposition to woman suffrage! Later, Harris was the first women war correspondent to go abroad in World War I. This novel was the basis for the 1951 film *I'd Climb the Highest Mountain* written and produced by Georgia native Lamar Trotti and starred Susan Hayward and William Lundigan. This title was reprinted by the University of Georgia in 1998, but the first edition is very uncommon, especially signed. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
