London Macmillan and Co. 1872. Early edition, 'Fortieth Thousand' on title leaf. Octavo, rebound at an early date [1907] in half red calf over marbled boards, recently rebacked with full red calf spine with raised bands, gilt tiles and rules and decorations within the compartments. [14] 192 pp [preliminaries: blank, half-title leaf, frontispiece, title leaf, contents, prelimiary poem]. Two early inscriptions on recto of frontispiece leaf: "To Master Arnold Hotson with Auntie's love Nov 6th 1873" (and) "Rebound for Dennis II Auntie A.T.P. / Uncle HSP. } Baltimore, Xmas 1907". Small damp-stain to upper corners of first few leaves in margins only. Mild small stains in the text, light fraying to fore-edge of front free endpaper, wear to corners of the binding (not the rebacking); a very good copy. Overall, quite a pleasing example of a very early printing of 'Alice'.Very Good
