New York: The Macmillan Company, 1939. - 8vo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gold. Original colour illustrated dust-jacket by Chavanne. Spine head of dust-jacket chipped, price-clipped, else a near fine copy in a very good plus dust-jacket. First edition, a very nice copy of this uncommon book, in a very nice dust-jacket. Set on the eve of the Black revolution on the Haitian island of Santo Domingo in 1791, Drums at Dusk is a story of racial tension, violence and love. Bontemps was a celebrated novelist, poet and librarian at Fisk University in Nashville. He also collaborated with Langston Hughes on several works, including Popo and Fifina, a children's travel book about two young black children who migrate to the coast with their parents. Bontemps continued writing children's literature throughout his life.
