WELLINGTON, Arthur Wellesley, Duke of (1769-1852). Victor of Waterloo.
- Autograph Letter Signed (?Wellington?) to ?Mon cher Monsieur Gerard? [the painter Baron Gerard], regretting that he cannot keep his appointment with him, as he is due to dine with the Emperor of Russia on that day.1 page 4to in French, with integral blank leaf, Paris, 28 August 1815. Just two months after his great victory at Waterloo, Wellington was in Paris, as were the other victorious leaders, Blücher, Alexander I of Russia, Francis I of Austria among them. Among other things, he was largely responsible for arranging the return of art works looted by Napoleon's army to their previous locations, such as the Venetian horses of St. Mark's. He nevertheless found considerable leisure to take advantage of the more sociable pleasures which Paris had to offer, and also sitting for his portrait by Baron Gérard, famous for his portraits of Napoleon and his family.Trans: ?I regret that I will not be able to come to see you on Wednesday as I am engaged to dine that day at two thirty in order to meet the Emperor of Russia; but I will arrange with you a time for the sitting before leaving for the Revue of the Emperors . . .?Baron Gérard, the most prolific and popular French portraitists of his day had painted Napoleon and most of his extended family, as well as famous portraits of Madame Récamier, Madame de Staël, and several of the French marshals. His one great battle scene, a depiction of the battle of Austerlitz, had won favour with Napoleon. Created a baron after the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy, Gérard went on to paint those responsible for the defeat of Napoleon, including Wellington. His portrait of Alexander I is today in Apsley House.A tear at the edge of the page has been repaired under our direction. A few minor brown spots at the bottom of the page, not touching the text.
