The Advice of Mwana Kupona Upon the Wifely Duty, from the Swahili Texts.
The Azania Press, Medstead, Hampshire 1934 - 8vo. 95 pages. A scarce and beautiful illustrated volume, dedicated and signed to front endpaper by one of the authors, William Hichens. Text is in Swahili Arabic and English. Bright green morocco boards, titled in gilt in cursive Swahili Arabic script to front, also with English titles in gilt to spine. Sun fading to spine and boards, loss to upper spine, otherwise in very good condition, internally pristine and bright, with vivid colour title page and a colourful Arabic embellishment leaf. Contained in a custom-made green cloth clamshell box for extra protection. A fine work, presented throughout the entire volume in both Arabic and English, one alongside the other, translates with utmost care and accuracy a well-known poem of early Swahili literature, which serves to dispel misconceptions concerning the religious duties and role of the Swahili woman. Originally written in 1858 by Mwana Kupona wife of a sheikh, at the time a sorrowful widow, was dedicated to her teenage daughter who would soon face critical life decisions as an adult, a citizen of the world, and a wife. For decades the significant verse was kept only by oral tradition. This is the only English edition, published only once, and limited to 100 copies. Exceedingly scarce, particularly with an author's signature, and in such beautiful condition. [Attributes: First Edition]
