Journey Into Fear
Hodder & Stoughton (London) 1940 - The very scarce first impression of the first edition of this tale of espionage by 'unquestionably our best thriller writer' (Graham Greene) who was 'the source on which we all draw' (John Le Carré). The subsequent very successful film version starred Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles (the latter of whom also shared in direction of it), was made in America and released in 1943. The book is in its original publisher's blue cloth with titles in black to spine; tight and square, with boards faintly marked; spine slightly sunned, and a little bumped and lightly frayed at extremes and joints as are corners. Very clean internally with no handling marks, just a faint and brief pencilled ownership inscription on ffep, and only minimal spotting to preliminaries. Ambler ceased novel-writing - for the time being - and joined the army after producing this book. Most copies of the edition were destroyed by German bombing of Hodder's warehouse when they were in storage awaiting distribution. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
