T. E. Lawrence, Boats for the R.A.F. 1929-1935
Castle Hill Press, Fordingbridge 2012 - A volume in the ongoing standard edition of Lawrence's works and letters, printed for subscribers. 'Boats for rhe RAF' is the second-longest book yet published in the series. Ranked by many subscribers as outstanding, it is an original and important publication, because it explores an area of Lawrence's life that has never before been treated in depth. Jeremy and Nicole Wilson have used reports and letters from numerous sources in Britain and overseas (including much previously unpublished material) to build a detailed narrative of the work Lawrence did helping to perfect RAF speed-boats during the final years of his enlistment. The account shows the enthusiasm and dedication he gave to this challenge, and by implication dismisses claims by some biographers that these years were, for Lawrence, a nihilistic waste of time. Illustrated with photographs and reproductions of contemporary design drawings. Letterpress-printed endpapers. 432p. (xxii, 390p). One of 150 numbered quarter-bound copies, of a total edition of 227 copies (of which 34 copies were reserved). Bound by The Fine Book Bindery in the Castle Hill Press series style: cream canvas spine with grey paper-covered sides. This copy includes the rigid cloth-covered slip-case that was optional for subscribers. There was no just-jacket.
