Dole's Memoirs were written at the request of Thurston, publisher of The Honolulu Advertiser. Toward the ends of their lives the two men collaborated on Thurston's Memoirs. Taken together, the three volumes comprise a major source of information about the Hawaiian revolution, by two of the major players.
