GEORGE IV (1762-1830). King of Great Britain and Irerland.
- Document Signed (?George R?), a commission appointing Ralph Abercrombie Secretary to the mission ?to Our Good Brother The Emperor of Brazil?, headed by Percy Clinton Sydney, Viscount Strangford.1 page oblong folio on vellum, with the Great Seal in light brown wax, attached, in excellent condition in a metal skippet, attached by an attractive red and silver silk cord, ending in two tassels.Windsor Castle, 19 August 1828. Brazil had declared its independence from Portugal in 1822, resulting in a constitutional monarchy under Emperor Pedro I. Strangford was already well acquainted with Brazil, and with the Portuguese royal family. His first appointment as a young diplomat was to the Portuguese court, and he later claimed that he was responsible for persuading the monarch to depart for the safety of Brazil when Napoleon threatened to invade Portugal. He was appointed envoy-extraordinary to the court in Brazil, returning to England in 1815. His subsequent career was punctuated by frequent clashes with George Canning, but he returned to serve in Brazil the year after Canning's death.Ralph Abercrombie, appointed here as his secretary, was to become a distinguished diplomat in his own right. He was the grandson of the famous general, Sir Ralph Abercromby, who was killed fighting the French in Egypt. The verso of the document is affected by numerous rust stains, evidently from the skippet, and a few lesser rust stains also appear on the recto. The document, however, remains in clear and legible condition, and the Great Seal is very well preserved.
