Observations on the Diseases of the Army.
- London: Printed for A. Millar and T. Cadell. 1768. 8vo, (i-iii). iv-xxiv, (1), 2-345, (i-ii), iii-cxx, (30). Old calf, worn, front board nearly detached. Printed label affixed to front paste down reads ÒBooks from the Library of Dr. David Stuart, WashingtonÕs physician, who married the widow of Laurence Washington, Geo. WashingtonÕs Half Brother and owner of Mount Vernon.Ó Front free end paper is signed by ÒD. StuartÓ who also wrote an index to frequently referenced pages beneath. A few MSS notations, in a similar or the same hand, are scattered in the book. Shelf mark Ò874Ó on upper cover. Gift inscription dated 1928 written on both pastedowns. Sixth Edition. Contrary to the claims of the label, David Stuart married Eleanor Calvert, the widow of George WashingtonÕs stepson, making him the stepfather of Martha WashingtonÕs grandchildren. Born in Scotland, he studied medicine in Edinburgh and later became a business and political associate of George Washington, though there is no record of him being his physician. First published in 1852, Observations on the Diseases of the Army earned Pringle the title Òfather of military medicine.Ó
