Text in French only. This is Volume IV of a four-volume edition. Certainly from a de luxe limited edition but the number not stated in this volume. Printed in France by l'Imprimerie de Gillé. The original issue of this work (1789-92) consisted of 48 parts, each comprising four leaves of plates i.e 192. Chestnut full-leather binding, pebbled, with crisp gilt-stamped design to the front board and with crisp, gilt-stamped lettering and design to the spine. Reverse side of boards also in full leather, pebbled, of two colors, chestnut and deep green, and with elaborate gilt stamping, including inside dentelles. Elaborately hubbed spine, with title and place of publication. Gently bumped spine head, with minor chip [1/16 inch] at top edge. Spine tail gently bumped and rubbed. Lower corners lightly abraded, minor. Upper corners fairly sharp. Light chestnut brown moiré endpapers. All edges gilt. 20.5 x 13.5 inches. With unnumbered pages of text and plates. With 56 full pages of text commentary opposite 56 full pages of plates, as called for in the index [Tableau de 48 livraisons de la Galerie de Florence]. The original edition of Volume IV had 12 leaves of plates for a total of 48 full pages of plates. However, the 1807 edition was supplemented by two addition leaves [livraisons] for a total of 8 additional full page plates. Some plate pages illustrate two plates [the second usually a rendering in bas-relief], other plate pages illustrate one plate. All plates with tissue guards, most in pristine condition. Due to the presence of the tissue guards virtually no off-setting has occurred. Occasional foxing to the pages/plates, especially at the rear preliminaries. Else an exceptionally clean copy, and quite tight. No remainder marks. Very gently read. With a lovely ex libris bookplate from the library of Julio B. Samarcelli [1903-1988], a Los Angeles based artist. The bookplate in a distinctive art deco style and with a design reminiscent of the work of the artist Rockwell Kent. The bookplate is neatly affixed to the title page and does not obscure any of the lettering of that page. This is an absolutely gorgeous volume. A Very Good Plus copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
