DEE GOONG AN An Ancient Chinese detective Story
Printed for the Author By Toppan Printing Company, Tokyo, Japan 1949 - [8], iv, [2], XXIII, [1 blank], 237 pages. 6.25 x 8.5 inches. Paper boards with original woodblock printed dj affixed. One of 1200 copies "bound in an original wood print and signed and sealed by the author" of which this is number 637. SIGNED by Van Gulik on the limitation page. A very nice copy with shelf wear to the bottom edge and fraying to base of the spine panel, a bit of wear to the head of the spine panel, and some minor wear at the corners. Little of the usual browning to the endpapers, woodblock print still bright and clean with just a touch of fading to the top of the letters for "GOONG" on the front panel. An above average copy of a book hard to find in nice condition. The cover illustration was created by the author, as were six plates in the text. The book that catapulted Van Gulik from an author known in scholarly circles to one known internationally for his Judge Dee mysteries, 3 of which are translated here by Van Gulik from very early Chinese texts. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
