Port. frontis. and 12 aquatint plates by David Allan. Ex.-libris Sir Philip Manfield with his and another bookplate, some very light browning, contemporary speckled calf, extremities rubbed, some sl. wear to boards, dec. gilt fillet with gilt motifs and gilt lettered title label to spine sl. chipped with sl. loss, joints cracked and internally reinforced. Abbey Life 244; Gaskell 688.The text based on the quarto edition of 1728. Nine leaves of engraved music and words, numbered 1-18.The plates engraved by David Allan are the first use in Scotland of aquatint for book illustration. Allan was a close friend of Sandby who had in fact executed a set of etched plates for this same poem after drawings by Allan in 1758, in order to gain attention for the young artist in London. Some of Sandby’s earliest experiments with the aquatint process were taken from designs by Allan ‘Sports of the Carnival of Rome’, ‘The Neopolitan Dance’. Additional postage may be necessary.
