Miniature painting.
c. 1945-55. : Oil on board, c. 160 í- 160 mm, signed at lower right. Framed and glazed. : Lister was best known as a writer on William Blake, Samuel Palmer, George Richmond and Edward Calvert (?The Ancients?) but he was also a painter in his own right . In his words: ?Miniature art is art expressed with the spirit of the jeweller; it is to large painting what a madrigal is to an oratorio; or, as the Chinese poet Lu Chi put it: ?In a sheet of paper is contained the infinite??. His favourite subjects included mythical characters, dancers and, as here, swans. Inspired to paint by illuminator and Fitzwilliam Museum curator, Albert Cousins, Lister later acted as President of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Gravers and Sculptors (1970-1980). Provenance: Lister family.
