London: Printed for Jacob Tonson in the Strand 1723 - Quarto. Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1723-25. One of 750 copies printed. Five volumes are present. Volume The Third is missing. Original, period brown leather binding with decorative rectangular tooling on covers. The covers (front and back) of the remaining five volumes are all detached with all spines darkened and very dry. The margins of the front and back boards are also very dark and dry. Pages are in very good condition and are clean for the most part with minor toning and print is showing through the opposite side on some pages,typical of this period. Front blank end pages are missing in Volumes I and VI. First few pages of each volume are detached but present. Edges of the title page of Volume VI are tattered. Beautiful decorations and embellishments throughout and engraving of Shakespeare writing at his desk is present in Volume I. Rare first quarto edition of Shakespeare’s works, edited by Alexander Pope. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
