Contemporary prize binding of brown calf, spine elaborately gilt in compartments, green morocco label, marbled endpapers and edges, double-line rules to boards and crest to upper board gilt. Prize bookplate. Some pencilled underlining and annotations in the margins. Binding very lightly rubbed, contents toned. A very good copy. Diagrams and tables throughout. First edition, first impression of the author's first book on radioactivity. Ernest Rutherford (1871–1937) was a pioneer in the study of nuclear physics, the discoverer of the structure of the atom and in 1917 the first scientist to split the atom.
