Grantchester, Cambridge 1889 - First and only edition, small 8vo, pp. [4], 195; mounted woodburytype frontispiece of a fabricated dragon's head, 4 lithographs (3 tinted); contemporary if not original cloth-backed marbled boards, printed paper label on spine; edges rubbed but generally a very good copy. This copy of the book is accompanied by 2 autograph letters from the author, totaling 7 pages, both dated 1889, and both discussing the book and the difficulties of printing the lithographs, together with a series of 14 proofs of the 4 lithograph illustrations. In one letter he states: "I am as you suppose wishing to try a little amateur lithography. I have written a story and printed it on an amateur press and now I want to do a few illustrations."A young Yorkshire lad, in the company of one Jack Engledown start off for Africa to find "marvelous discoveries," and end up in a lost world populated by dragons and other monsters. A romantic, and curious about all matters scientific and antiquarian, Samuel Page Widnall (1825-1894) began taking photographs as early as 1854. He set up a photographic studio and established his own private printing press to produce the books he wrote. His busy life also encompassed natural and antiquarian history, carpentry, and metalwork.
