The Story of the Atlantic Telegraph.
New York, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1892. 8°. Portrait-Frontispiece of Cyrus W. Field, IX, 415 pages. Beautiful, green, modern Hardcover (Green Buckram with gilt lettering on red morocco spine-label). Excellent condition. The 1892 edition of the story of the Atlantic telegraph with a signed autographed letter from Cyrus W. Field tipped in. The ALS from Cyrus Field tipped in opposite the frontispiece portrait of him. Dated 26th May, 1881 at Field's office at 145 Broadway, New York, Field writes to D B Ivison Esq. (Ivison lived in Bergen County, New Jersey, and was a subscriber to the American Museum of Natural History.) The letter thanks Ivison for his communication of the previous day and states 'I shall be glad to see you at this office at 12 o'clock tomorrow (Friday).' The text of the letter appears to be in a secretarial hand with Field's own calligraphic signature, slightly smudged. The letter is tipped into the gutter and from the marginal glue staining would appear to have been their for a century or more. The book comes with an original piece of the first atlantic cable !
