Sacred Melodies from Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, Adapted to the Best English Poets, and Appropriated to the Use of the British Church
Printed for the Author, London 1815 - Splendidly bound set of composer William Gardiner's adaptation of classical works into hymns for the English church service. As a young musician, Gardiner befriended a German refugee carrying the score of a string trio by an unknown composer, Ludwig van Beethoven, in his luggage. Gardiner organized a local performance of the piece, the first concert of Beethoven's music in England. Later in Gardiner's career, in an attempt to elevate the quality of English church music, he fit English lyrics to melodies by Beethoven, Haydn and Mozart, "highest fountains of musical taste and expression in the German school," as well as works by Handel, Gluck, and other composers. Volume I of Sacred Melodies first appeared in 1812, meeting with such success that Gardiner prepared a second volume for publication in 1815: both volumes of this set are the 1815 issue. A striking set of musical and historical interest, reflecting the ascendancy of Continental music (and tastes) in nineteenth-century Britain. Two folio volumes, full contemporary crushed red morocco tooled in blind and gilt, raised bands, ornate monogram "EJ" to upper boards, gilt dentelles, violet silk moiré endpapers stamped in gilt, all edges gilt. Elaborately engraved title pages in both volumes. Preliminaries include Gardiner's dedication to the Prince Regent, advertisement, preface, and table of contents in Volume I; advertisement and table of contents in Volume II. Musical scores engraved throughout. Occasional mark to deluxe bindings, small abrasion to front endpapers in the first volume, expert restoration to spine ends. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
