ALL MEN ARE BROTHERS (Shui Hu Chuan). Translated from the Chinese
London:: Methuen & Co.,. 1933.. 8vo. 1st UK edition. xiii, [3], 1279, [3 (blank)] pp.. Black cloth binding with gilt stamped title lettering. TEG. Yellow dust jacket.. VG+ (offset to eps)/VG+ (modest wear).. Water Margin (Shui Hu Zhuan, sometimes abbreviated to Shui Hu), also translated as Outlaws of the Marsh, Tale of the Marshes, All Men Are Brothers, Men of the Marshes, or The Marshes of Mount Liang, is a 14th C. novel attributed to Shi Nai'an. Praised as an early "masterpiece" of vernacular fiction, it is renowned for the "mastery and control" of its mood and tone. The work is, however, also known for its use of vivid, humorous and especially racy languages, with the novel written in vernacular Chinese rather than Classical Chinese; it is considered one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. [Wiki]. Buck's translation one of the first to appear in English. Uncommon, especially in dust jacket. . Frontis plate. Drawings.
