A Natural and Civil History of California: Containing An Accurate Description of that Country, Its Soil, Mountains, Harbours, Lakes, Rivers and Seas; its Animals, Vegetables, Minerals, and Famous Fishery for Pearls. {etc.]. {Two Volumes}
- London. Printed for James Rivington and James Fletcher, at the Oxford Theatre, in Pater-Noster Row. 1759. First English Edition. Two Volumes. 8vo. (7 ¾ x 5). Vol. One: [24], 455 pp. Vol. Two: [12], 387 pp. Engraved frontispiece in each volume: 'The Manner of curing the Sick in California' in volume one. 'Women of California' in volume two. Folding map of California in volume one facing page 13. Engraved plate in volume one and another in volume two. The two volumes bound in half brown calf with gilt titles over red morocco lettering pieces on the spine, gilt rules and decorations, marbled boards. Top edges gilt. Each volume has a small, partially erased 'Liverpool Library' stamp on the title page and another stamp of the same size in each volume of the text (on page 129 in volume one and on page 127 in volume two - that's it). These stamps are discreet, small, and nearly match the text in size and font. A very nice, clean set of the first book focused on California. A little rubbing to the edges of the bindings. A very good set.
