POOLS - Rare Signed Copy of The First Hardcover Edition/First Printing - ONLY SIGNED COPY ONLINE
New York City, NY: Alfred A. Knopf, 1992 - 1st Printing. Signed. 208 pages. Published in 1992. Retrospective collection of photographs on subject. One of the most beautiful photography books of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes, is infinitely superior to, and should not be confused with the 2007 Reissued Edition. Published in a tiny first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. A stunningly beautiful production by Sam Shahid: Oversize-volume format. The book weighs 7 pounds. Linen cloth boards with white titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by various contributors, a Who's Who of 20th-century photography. The production values cannot be improved upon: Printed on very thick, 100-pound Rapoport Lithographic Stock Paper in the United States to the highest standards. At the time the book was published, the retail price was $100 because of the paper Klein insisted upon. According to art book publishers, the book would be impossible to re-produce in exactly the same way today without incurring $500 for each copy in paper cost alone. In pictorial DJ, which features the iconic "Pool" photograph by Ralph Gibson, and titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents the most sumptuous, sensuous, and sensational collection of swimming-pool photographs of the 20th century. They include images by Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston, Jacques-Henri Lartigue, William Klein, Helmut Newton, Robert Mapplethorpe, Herb Ritts, Steven Meisel, Greg Gorman, and Bruce Weber, among many others. "Pools" owes an immense debt to Slim Aarons' ground-breaking books, "A Wonderful Time" and "Once Upon A Time". Aarons showed images of the American elite relaxing by the pool. Their cumulative effect was such that the swimming pool became a concrete symbol of American culture (Kelly Klein devotes eight pages to Aarons' "pool" photographs). The pool is American leisure at its most Edenic and erotic. But it goes deeper, as it were, than that: With its languid indolence, its emphasis on "immersion" and "slowing down", it is the very opposite of our "work" and "productivity" ethic. One gets nothing done in a pool; that's the whole point. Kelly Klein's eye is impeccable, but then again, many of the greatest photographs in the medium's history were taken in swimming pools. Esther Williams' "underwater palace" pool, which cost her $50, 000 in 1952, a princely sum then, will set one back by at least $500, 000 today. OMG. Thank you, Kelly, for this blissful book instead. Klein published a "follow-up" volume, "Pools: Reflections", in 2012, bringing her rich subject to our time. An absolute "must-have" title for photography book collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Kelly Klein. This title is a modern photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the true First Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Beware: Most copies available online have major flaws yet are priced as though they had collectible value. A rare signed copy thus. 187 plates. Some of the world's greatest photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO KELLY KLEIN'S "POOLS: REFLECTIONS" TITLE IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0679409130. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
