A Pedestrian Tour of Two Thousand Three Hundred Miles, in North America. To the Lakes, -The Canadas, - And the New-England States Performed in the Autumn of 1821. Embellished with Views
New York: J. D. Myers & W. Smith, 1822. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. An about Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original brick-colored lettered and decorated boards (original boards rubbed, spine -replaced but old - cracked and with some loss, front hinge held by white tape), complete with nine full-page illustrations and with two pages of advertisements to the rear. The book's front pastedown carries the bookplate of Charles H. Bell and the front free endpaper that of noted William Wordsworth collector Cynthia Morgan St. John whose Wordsworth Collection now is held by Cornell University. Charles H. Bell [aka Charles Henry Bell] served in the New Hampshire House, the New Hampshire Senate, and as Governor of New Hampshire. Stansbury conducted North American's first noted walking tour in 1821, providing in this volume some of the best early descriptions of Battlefields of the British conquest of Canada (1759 - 1763), the 1812 invasion of Canada, wars with the Native Americans ("Indians") in the New England States, and the disastrous expedition of General Burgoyne who was forced to surrender his 5,000 troops to the American revolutionary forces. In this work, Stansbury created the American walking tour literary genre, preceding later walking tour works such as Walt Whitman’s “Song Of The Open Road” (1856), Henry David Thoreau’s “The Maine Woods” (1854) and “Cape Cod” (1856), and John Muir’s classic “A Thousand Mile Walk To The Gulf” (1912). Copies of this important work are extraordinarily scarce to the market with only two copies having appeared at auction in the last 55 years, neither of which were in their original boards. A rare copy of an important book with an excellent Provenance and in the Publisher's original boards.
