The Ship That Sailed to Mars, A Fantasy
George G. Harrap & Company Limited, London - [1923], first edition, grey paper boards with title in black, white vellum spine richly decorated in glit, containing the title, author, publisher, and design of a ship on clouds sailing above planets, upon one of which sits an impish creature, grey endpapers, no typeset pages at all, the entire book is comprised of sheets tipped onto grey card stock containing either an illustration by Timlin or the store in calligraphy, written by Timlin. The book contains 48 pages of text in Timlin's calligraphy and another 48 pages containing his colored illustrations. In overall very good + condition, with some minor restoration work done by a conservation expert to the spine and corners. Some minor creasing and a small tear or two in the margins of one or two pages. Considered a landmark of children's illustrated literature, this book put the author/illustrator "in the top ten of fantasy illustrators with Rackham, Dulac, Goble and Nielsen" (Alan Horne, The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators). Sadly, it was the only children's book Timlin ever wrote, his other two books had to do with South Africa to where he immigrated as a young man becoming a successful architect and artist. This book is by far the loveliest we have ever seen and is a truly unique example of the magic and wonder of the illustrated book. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
