Born in Halifax he only received limited schooling, yet began teaching at the relatively early age of 21 and converted to Christianity in 1833 and became a minister the following year. He founded the Micmac Missionary Society and from 1853 lived in Hantsport, Nova Scotia, where he continued his work among the Micmac.
