The History of Persecution, in four parts. viz. I. Amongst the Heathens. II. Under the Christian Emperors. III. Under the Papacy and Inquisition. IV. Amongst the Protestants. with a preface Containing Remarks on Dr. Roger's Vindication of the Civil Establishments of Religion.
J. Gray, at the Cross Keys in the Poultry., London. 1736 - Contemporary full calf binding, spine has five raised bands with gilt double rules in compartments, gilt double line borders on covers; red and black ink title page, 9 fold-out illustrations, a few head and tail pieces, and ornate initial letters; pp. xcii, vi, 7-468. 'Bray Library' inked to front paste-down. Previous owner name inked to top right of title page. VERY GOOD condition. All illustrations present and, despite the occasional blemish, they are in wonderfully bright and crisp condition. Two of the plates are almost pristine, the rest have one or two splits, mainly on a fold, and are either confined to the margin areas or extending partly into the printed area. Text block is firm and tight with everything held in place, and top edge is dust-darkened; pages are very clean and crease-free. Boards are firmly attached and rubbed here and there with worn extremities, although there is still a good amount of shine left on the binding; backstrip is cracked, spine ends worn with loss of binding, and spine label is missing, but the title impression is very clear. A wonderful copy, and a depressing reminder of how, in certain pockets throughout the world today, authorities can and do behave. [Attributes: First Edition]
