The Ballad of Reading Gaol
Leonard Smithers, London 1898 - 31pp. First edition. One of eight hundred copies, which have been printed on hand-made paper. A scarce first edition of Oscar Wilde's famous gaol work where he used the pseudonym C.3.3.Original publisher's quarter cream cloth over brown cloth covered boards. The cream cloth is sunned, soiled and stained - the gilt title to the spine is faint and only just legible. The brown cloth has faired a lot better - all four corners are a little turned in and the rear board carries a vertical crease with light associated damage to the rear paste-down. There are open splits to the inner hinge between several gatherings - though all gatherings are holding reasonably firmly. The pages are relatively free from foxing but there is some finger soiling to the pages - nothing heavy so the pages given a light clean could be improved further. A good copy of a scarce sought after first edition in its original publisher's cloth. Shipping from the UK [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
