Der Welt-Untergang [SIGNED]
Carl Konegen, Vienna 1921 - Signed in pencil on title page, text page with lithographic vignette, and all but the 3rd plate. 98/150 colophon numbered by hand. Folio (19 1/2 x 14 1/4). (3) 12 plates. Original beige quarter cloth over boards with striking design and black lettering on cover. Illustrated lithographic title page. Striking example of Birnbaum's expressionistic work rendered in a series of 12 lithographic images depicting the apocalypse with a poetic introduction describing the struggle of human kind and the world beyond, accompanied by a vignette. Powerful sequence in Birnbaums distinct style. Printed under his supervision by the "Secession" Graphic Art Institute in Vienna on Japan paper. Signatures and titles in pencil underneath imagery. Text in German. Light wear along edges of portfolio and 4 inch tear at bottom of foredge flap, and crease in bottom flap. Most plates with light creasing in margins, not at all infringing on the imagery. Portfolio in very good, plates in very good to near fine condition. Uriel Birnbaum (1894-1956) was a self-taught Austrian Jewish painter, caricaturist and writer. Birnbaum illustrated a number of books, including books for Edgar Allan Poe and Lewis Carroll, and worked as an illustrator for the children's magazine "Der Regenbogen." He was awarded the literary Bauernfeld-Preis for his volume of sonnets "Gottes Krieg" in 1923. Due to his severe injury during W.W.I and his intermarriage he was protected from deportation but emigrated to the Netherlands in 1939. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
