The Mill on the Floss. Complete in three volumes.
William Blackwood, Edinburgh & London 1860 - First Edition, first printing - complete in three volumes. 8vo. 361pp, 319pp & 313pp + xvi publisher's catalogue bound into rear of final volume. Original publisher's orange-brown cloth, gilt lettered at spines and with embossed ornate decoration to upper and lower boards. Cloth a little darkened at edges and tips of corners lightly chafed and occasionally knocked. A small area of wear to base of spine of the first volume, and a quite hefty bump to upper spine. Binding a litter tender at title page of first volume, yet perfectly sound. Really quite a nice bright set, the first volume exhibits some light spotting, primarily to leaf edges, but volumes two and three are very crisp internally, save for the very occasional finger mark to margins. Eliot's celebrated second novel, recounting the story of Maggie Tulliver and reflecting the disgrace that the author herself experienced while in a twenty-year relationship with a married man. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
