Edward Lhuyd 1707. Volume 1 only (no more published). 436 pp + 4 page index which includes the errata. In full brown contemporary speckled calf paneled boards, with decorative blind tooling, some wear. New spine, to style, raised bands, titles in gilt to red leather label. Internally, armorial bookplate and ink initial to fpd, title page with the Theater vignette, [20], 312 pp, (iv), (A-Ee2), 425-436, (Ll-Ll2), some mis-numbering as appears normal - page 41 = 1, 42 = 2, 43 = 3, 44 = 4, then back to normal, has the list of subscribers, mainly 3 columns per page, some attractive printers devices. Some very minor browning to some of the earlier page edges, but minimal. A lovely copy of an important grammar book. (ESTC T116102. Brunet 1049. GRAESSE 194) Title continues: Archaeologia Britannica, Giving Some Account Additional to What Has Been Hitherto Published, of The Languages, Histories and Customs of the Original Inhabitants of Great Britain: From Collections and Observations in Travels Through Wales, Cornwal, Bas-Bretagne, Ireland and Scotland. Chapters on: The comparative Etymology, The comparative Vocabulary, The Armoric Grammar and Vocabulary, Dr Davies's Dictionary, Cornish Grammar, Catalogue of British Manuscripts in Welsh and Latin, Essay towards a British Etymologicon, The Introduction to the Irish, Irish Dictionary etc. Lhuyd [Lhwyd; formerly Lloyd], Edward (1659/60?-1709), naturalist and philologist, was the Keeper of the Ashmolean Museum.
