Songs, Sketch of the Life of Blind Tom, The Marvelous Musical Prodigy, The Negro Boy Pianist.
Baltimore: The Sun Book and Job Printing Establishments, ca 1876. - Tom Wiggins (1849-1908) was a blind African American autistic savant born into slavery in Georgia, who became the first black man to entertain in the White House, when he did so for President James Buchanan. He was an incredibly gifted musical prodigy, who could perform a song for his audiences after hearing it only once, as part of his highly entertaining shows. He reputedly could play two different songs on the piano while simultaneously singing Dixie, among other unique performances. He published numerous original compositions and had a lengthy and largely successful career throughout the United States. He was one of the best-known American performing pianists during the 19th century. General James Bethune was his guardian, and it is believed he made a fortune off Tom's gifts, while Tom received no money, only basic care, food, and clothing. 9 x 6 inches. 30, [2] pages, including a Special Notice on page [31], stating that Tom's repertoire now numbers upwards of 5,000 pieces, entirely at his memory's disposal, and that he will also give his marvelous and amusing Imitations, Recitations, Anecdotes, etc.; and an advertisement on page [32] for Steinway & Sons pianos having received an award at the Centennial of 1876. The ad continues onto the inside of the rear wrap. There is a Programme of selections Tom will play inside the front wrap and another on the back of the rear wrap. Scattered surface losses on the front wrap from silverfish, mild soiling to both wraps, light evidence of the pamphlet having been folded vertically at one time. Otherwise intact and in decent condition. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
