Original Vellum with handwritten title and date to the spine;-. Engraved frontispiect amonst the title page;- The libertine poetry of Matthijs van de Merwede van Clootwijk (ca. 1625-1680). Now his love-songs are more spiritual and include a poetical translation of the Song of Salomon, as well as of the Penitential Psalms. Matthijs van de Merwede van Clootwijk (ca. 1625-1680), was a member of an important Dutch noble family. After his studies in Leyden, he left in 1646 for England, then went to France and Italy, where he led a frivolous life in Rome, Venice and Naples. He also met Dutch painters and poets living there, like Adriaan van Essesteyn and Reinier Anslo. In 1650 he returned to the Netherlands to marry. The exact date of his death remains unknown, but according to rumours, he died from the terrible effects of the unbridled sensual life he had led in Italy.
