WHAT ART THOU, AND WHAT DOST THOU WANT? CRIED THE OLD DAME. From The Water Babies by Charles Kingsley.
NP.ND. 1915 - ORIGINAL PUBLISHED ARTWORK for The First Heath Robinson edition of Charles Kingsley's famous book, The Water Babies. The mono pen and ink drawing shows an old woman seated with a young boy stood, his head bowed, before her (image measures 22.5 x 31 cms) and is signed by the artist in black ink to the bottom left corner. The complete piece, double mounted, framed and glazed measures 67 x 55 cms and has the ink stamp of Heath Robinson's artistic agent on the rear. In print the image (reduced to 10.5 x 14.5 cms) appears on page 46 of the 1915 First edition. A copy of the 1915 first edition, the original green cloth binding rubbed and bumped, is included with the drawing.
